Product Photos for Etsy

Listing images at the size Etsy wants, framed for the crop Etsy actually shows.

One free generation a day. No account, no card.

How it works

  1. 1. Upload your product photo

Any straight-on shot. Your product is kept exactly as photographed.

  2. 2. Pick a scene

Linen and wood surfaces read handmade. The Etsy preset sets 2000px and 4:3 automatically.

  3. 3. Download and upload to Etsy

One free watermarked image; an account gives clean full-resolution files.

Why this is worth getting right

Etsy has a specific and slightly awkward set of image rules that most sellers only half-know. The platform asks for at least 2000 pixels on the SHORT side and recommends a 4:3 primary image, which is unusual — most marketplaces specify a long edge or a square. That combination matters because Etsy then crops your primary image to a square for search results and to a different ratio again in the mobile app, so a 4:3 photo with the product filling the frame edge to edge loses its edges in every place a buyer first sees it. The practical rule is to compose 4:3 but keep the product inside the central square, which is not obvious and is the single most common Etsy photography mistake. The second thing that separates Etsy from Amazon is what buyers expect to see. Amazon wants an isolated product on pure white and treats context as clutter; Etsy buyers are shopping for handmade goods and read a pure-white cutout as mass-produced. Wood, linen, marble and natural light signal handmade in a way a seamless sweep actively works against, and Etsy’s own seller education says as much. Third, Etsy gives you ten image slots and the algorithm rewards using them — but they are not ten variations of the same angle. The slots that convert are: the styled hero, the product in use or worn, a scale reference, a detail crop showing the making, the full set if it is a set, and packaging. Fourth, and specific to the marketplace: Etsy expects the listing photo to show the actual item you will ship, particularly in one-of-a-kind categories. A generated background is fine; a generated product is a policy problem and a review problem.

Tips that actually help

  • Compose 4:3 but keep the product inside the central square. Etsy crops your primary image square in search results, and edge-to-edge framing loses its edges there.
  • Skip the pure-white cutout for handmade categories. Etsy buyers read seamless white as mass-produced, which is the opposite of what you are selling.
  • Use all ten slots with different jobs, not ten angles of one. Scale reference and a making-detail crop convert far better than another three-quarter view.
  • Shoot the actual item you will ship in one-of-a-kind categories. Etsy expects the listing to depict the specific piece, and buyers of handmade goods check.
  • Test the first image at thumbnail size before publishing. Etsy search is a grid of small squares, and a photo that only works large will never get the click.

Who uses this

Handmade shops
Small makers shoot on a kitchen table in whatever light is available. Re-scening the same product photo onto linen or wood gives a coherent shop without a studio.
One-of-a-kind pieces
A piece sells once and cannot be re-shot. Getting a good listing image from a single phone photo is the whole requirement.
Seasonal shop refresh
Etsy traffic is strongly seasonal. Re-scening the same catalogue into seasonal props is far cheaper than re-shooting for every holiday.
Vintage resellers
Vintage listings live on condition honesty plus presentation. Keeping the actual item and improving only the background threads that needle.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Etsy photos be?
At least 2000 pixels on the short side, with 4:3 recommended for the primary image. That short-side rule is unusual and is where most sellers under-size.
Why does my primary photo look cropped in search?
Etsy crops the primary image to a square for search results. Compose 4:3 but keep the product within the central square so nothing important is lost.
Should I use a white background on Etsy?
Usually not. Etsy buyers are shopping for handmade goods and read seamless white as mass-produced. Wood, linen and natural light perform better in most handmade categories.
Is an AI-generated background allowed?
A generated background around your own photographed product is a very different thing from a generated product. Etsy expects the item shown to be the item shipped, especially for one-of-a-kind listings.
How many photos should a listing have?
Use all ten slots, but give each one a job — hero, in use, scale, making detail, full set, packaging. Ten angles of the same view is wasted inventory.
Does the tool change my product?
No. Your product is composited from your own photograph; only the surface, props and lighting are generated.
What about the mobile app crop?
The app crops differently again, which is another reason to keep the product away from the frame edges rather than filling it.
